Riverside Highland Water Company
Had Levels of Coliform Bacteria above the
Drinking Water Standards
From 2007 Consumer Confidence
& Shareholders Reports

Our water system violated a drinking water standard. Although this was not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened and what we did to correct this situation.

We routinely monitor for drinking water contaminates. We took twenty sample tests for the presence of coliform bacteria during the month of June 2007. Two of our samples showed the presence of total coliform bacteria. The standard for a water system of our size is that no more than one sample may do so per month.

This was not an emergency. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately. Total coliform bacteria are generally not harmful themselves. Coliforms are bacteria which are naturally present in the environment and are used as an indicator that other potentially harmful bacteria may be present.

Coliforms were found in more samples than allowed and this was a warning of potential problems. Whenever we detect coliform bacteria in any sample, we do follow-up testing to see if other bacteria of greater concern, such as fecal coliform or E. coli are present. We did not find any of these bacteria in our subsequent testing, and additional testing shows that this problem has been resolved.

Furthermore, repeat samples taken immediately after we were notified of the problem, as well as samples taken upstream and downstream of the sites was negative

Since we had not had any other indication of problems and repeat sampling showed no signs of coliform bacteria, we contacted the laboratory that samples the sites to try and identify the source of the problem. We received a letter from the laboratory which state that there was an error in the sampling; however because proper procedure was not followed by the laboratory it was still considered a violation.
