In 2005, Riverside Highland Water Company pumped all of
its water from company owned wells from several groundwater
basins. Groundwater basins are deep natural underground
storage compartments separated by earthquake faults or other
natural barriers. Basins are replenished as water travels
over the surface of the land or through the ground. That
is why it is so important to control surface contamination.
In 2002, San Bernardino Valley Water Conservation District,
with input from Riverside Highland Water Company, completed
a study to assess the vulnerability of water wells in the
Lytle Creek and Riverside North Basins. The study indicated
that sources of possible contamination are gas stations,
dry cleaners and underground storage tanks.
